Vehicle history checks

What's included in a vehicle history check?

Fifteen separate checks on every report. The big three red-flags: stolen (MIAFTR insurance + police registers), insurance write-off (current Cat A/B/S/N plus legacy Cat C/D for vehicles written off before October 2017, with insurer name, loss date, and specific damage areas), and outstanding finance (with lender name, agreement type, date, and contact number). Plus: scrapped / unscrapped status, VIC inspection flag, Q-registration flag, mileage anomalies (DVSA trail), full MOT history with defects, previous keepers with ownership duration, plate changes, colour change history, import + export markers (including Northern Ireland as a distinct flag), running costs (road tax, CO2, MPG, projected fuel), full specs (BHP, Euro status, insurance group, body style), and next MOT + tax due dates plus SORN status. Instant on-screen report plus PDF in your inbox.

What counts as one 'history check'?

A single check of one vehicle, returning everything in the full report: DVLA snapshot, DVSA MOT history, and all 15 provenance + running-cost signals.

How fast is the report?

Usually under 60 seconds from payment to on-screen report. The PDF downloads immediately and a copy lands in your inbox.

What if the check fails or comes back empty?

We refund automatically. You're only charged for a successful report. If our provider can't return data for a reg, Stripe issues a full refund within minutes.

Do you support motorcycles, vans, and commercial vehicles?

Yes. Any UK-registered vehicle with a DVLA record. Cars, motorcycles, vans, motorhomes, and commercial vehicles are all supported.

Pricing & billing

What happens when my 14-day trial ends?

On day 14 your account locks until you pick a plan and add a card. No surprise charges, no hidden downgrade. Your data is kept for 90 days so you can pick up where you left off. Subscribe from £3.99/month, or pay as you go at £13.99 per check.

How does the conversion credit work?

If you buy a single history check at £13.99 and then subscribe from the report page, we credit the saving you would have had as a subscriber onto your first month: £4 off Personal, £5 off Enthusiast, £6 off Garage, or £9 off Fleet. One credit per account, applied at checkout.

Do I get more features on higher tiers, or just cheaper checks?

Both. Each tier adds features (more vehicles, more user seats, bulk vehicle import, compliance dashboard, organisation-wide reporting) AND lowers the per-check price. See the comparison table on the pricing page for the full list.

Can I change plans later?

Yes. Upgrade or downgrade from your Settings page. Upgrades take effect immediately (prorated); downgrades take effect at your next billing cycle. No fees, no contracts.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. No contracts, no cancellation fees. Cancel from your Settings page and you'll keep access until the end of your billing period.

I have a billing or invoice question

Email billing@garagehq.uk for anything to do with invoices, payments, refunds, or VAT receipts. We respond within one working day. For non-billing support, see the support centre at app.garagehq.uk/support after signing in.

Platform & data

Where does the vehicle data come from?

We use the official DVLA Vehicle Enquiry Service and DVSA MOT History API for vehicle identity, tax and MOT data. The provenance signals (stolen, write-off, finance, keepers, mileage anomalies, plate changes) come from our paid data partner, sourced from the same kinds of records a traditional provenance check uses.

Is my data secure?

Yes. All data is encrypted at rest and in transit (256-bit TLS). Hosted on Cloudflare's global edge network with automatic DDoS protection. We don't sell or share your data with anyone.

How is my account secured? What if I think it's been compromised?

Account security has three layers.

First, sign-in is via your Microsoft or Google account, so you inherit whatever 2FA / MFA you have enabled there. We don't store passwords ourselves.

Second, every time you sign in via a method you haven't used before, we email you a heads-up with the date, method, and a one-click "Lock my account" button.

Third, the lock restricts your account to a single sign-in method and revokes every existing session, so if you ever spot an unfamiliar sign-in you can shut the door immediately.

Recovery if you lock yourself out: email hello@garagehq.uk and we'll clear the lock after verifying you. Full walk-through at /support/locking-your-account once you're signed up.

Can I delete my account and all my data?

Yes, at any time. You can delete individual reports from the report page (Delete button at the bottom, with a confirmation modal that lists exactly what gets removed: the report itself, any share links, and the PDF). To delete your entire account and all associated data, email us. We run the GDPR Article 17 erasure as soon as we have your request, usually within a few working hours and always within 30 days at the latest. Stripe payment records are retained separately on Stripe's side because they're financial records under HMRC reporting rules, not personal data we hold.

What happens to my account if I stop using GarageHQ?

If you don't sign in for 18 months, we email a 30-day warning. If you still don't sign in after that, your account and all associated data are automatically deleted. This keeps us aligned with UK data-protection rules. We don't hang on to personal data longer than necessary. The 18-month clock runs from your last sign-in regardless of subscription state, but we won't auto-delete an account that has an active paid subscription on file.

Can my garage use this for customers?

Yes. The Garage plan (£14.99/mo) gives you 25 vehicles, 5 user seats, bulk CSV import, accountant-ready financial exports, an org-wide compliance dashboard so a manager sees every vehicle's MOT and insurance status at a glance, and org-wide reporting on vehicles, members and history-check spend. Every paid tier already includes a per-vehicle document wallet (insurance certificate + breakdown cover), so a workshop on Personal or Enthusiast gets that too. From Enthusiast upward, the clean-air zone (ULEZ / CAZ) compliance grid covering 12 UK zones is included alongside. Fleet (£24.99/mo) bumps Garage to unlimited vehicles and 15 user seats, the lowest per-check rate at £4.99, and single sign-on via Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta, Auth0, or any OIDC-compliant IdP. For larger fleets above that shape, dedicated onboarding, SLA-backed support, and bespoke integration work are an Enterprise offering on a commercial contract. Get in touch at enterprise@garagehq.uk.

Do you support single sign-on (SSO)?

Yes, on Fleet (£24.99/mo) and Enterprise. Connect any OIDC-compliant identity provider: Microsoft Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta, Auth0, or others. Configuration is per organisation, owner-managed. Once SSO is enforced for your org, members on verified domains sign in through your IdP rather than the email picker. Break-glass accounts are available for IdP outages.

Once you're signed up, see /support/configuring-sso for setup, /support/signing-in-with-sso for member sign-in, and /support/troubleshooting-sso if something goes wrong.

Do I need an account to run a one-off check?

Yes, but signup takes thirty seconds via Microsoft, Google, or email. You'll need an account so the report can be saved against your name and so we have somewhere to send a copy if your email client loses the original. Sign-up is free and there's no subscription unless you choose one. You can delete the account after the report if you want.
